Comfort and refuge

Where do you take comfort when times are tough?

Days like today, grey days with frost on the grass and the wind sharp and cold, it’s easy to turn up the covers and stay in bed where it’s warm. To hit snooze and get just five more minutes of sleep. It’s harder to make a conscious choice for self care or maintenance with habits outside of our comfort zone.

Easier to fall into the habits that bring about self criticism and blame. Thoughts that justify staying in place; after all, we’re not good enough anyway!

When you explore your pattern, you can choose something else outside that zone. Learning and growth often feel uncomfortable because they are outside the circle and yet, feeling stuck doesn’t feel good either. So sit and snuggle in for a minute if you must, then get up and do the things that help you grow! I’m pretty sure in my 30-something years never has hitting snooze and getting 8 more minutes of sleep ever made me feel more rested. Rather, more rushed and more chaotic, which is another sort of pattern of comfort isn’t it?

So I ask again, where do you take comfort or refuge? What habits/choices keep you where you are? Now take that awareness and tiptoe or bulldoze over that line and do something different!

My choice this morning was an orange creamsicle tea over spicy chai. Exercise over snooze.
